Florida Dietician Education and Licensing
Florida dietitian schools provide expert training that prepares students for the growing nutritionist careers. Licensure for dietitians in the Sunshine State is regulated by the Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Council. To qualify for entry-level jobs (or higher) as a Florida dietitian, students are required to complete an American Dietetic Association-accredited program at the bachelor's degree level, majoring in dietetics, nutrition, food management, or food science. All registered dietitians in Florida are eligible for state licensure. In Florida, dietitians may use the LD or LD/N credential following licensing.
Florida Dietitian Schools and Careers
Florida, well known for decades as a retirement Mecca, offers opportunities for licensed dietitians at its many retirement facilities, long-term care centers, hospitals, and other institutions that provide care and nutritional counseling to geriatric populations or obesity/diabetic treatment communities. You may provide consultation, menu planning, or other services at public and private clinical settings, corporation kitchens, public health agencies, or with research facilities. Other employment options include working as a consultant with a private medical nutritional company or government organization. More than half of the jobs nationwide for dietitians and nutritionists are at hospitals, outpatient clinics, and nursing facilities.
Depending on your Florida dietitian school, you may take courses in nutrition, chemistry, physiology, biology, food management, statistics, public health, and computer science. To maintain your licensing, you may be required to complete continuing education courses in dietitian science or nutrition every five years. You may also choose to return to a Florida dietitian school for a graduate degree to work in health care administration or education.
